PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLORIDA

This single-story, 4400-square foot contemporary residence, originally built in 1987, was totally remodeled and expanded. Before the remodel, the house was compartmentalized into small, walled-off areas that were difficult to use as living spaces. The new concept was to open up and connect all public areas; a 55-foot-long gathering space and an 18-foot-long kitchen combine to create a 73-foot-long open space for living and entertaining. Ceiling treatments were designed to visually organize the kitchen and gathering spaces, allowing an aesthetic designation without impeding the flow of the plan. Intermediate exterior porch beams were removed to open up lake and golf course views from this main area of the home, and old 8-foot tall doors with transoms were replaced with 12-foot-high by 16-foot-long sliding glass doors.

Maids' quarters and two spare bedrooms were gutted and reconfigured to create three large ensuite guest quarters for family and friends. The master wing was enlarged as well, and designated bedroom, library, exercise, and his and hers master bath and closet spaces were created.

The rear loggia, in addition to having extraneous beams removed to maximize views, was enlarged to 1870 square feet for outdoor entertaining, and a 388-square foot guest house was reworked to provide a summer kitchen and full facilities for overflow guests. In addition to these spaces, the main residence was expanded to 5212 total square feet.
